A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure to sit on a portfolio panel for BCIT's New Media Design Program. I was asked as a friend and alumni of this program to share my expertise and experience as a professional in this field by giving valuable feedback to this graduating class. I really enjoyed giving my two-cents, perhaps a long-awaited release of an old habit that was beat upon me from the three-hour student critiques during my Emily Carr art school past that happened ever too often.
I was very impressed by the level of talent and innovation that this group had pumped out of one long, intense year. It's refreshing to see what students are thinking up and creating. I highly recommend checking out student shows, be it art or design; if you are in a funk or creative block, there's something about fresh ideas that is contagious~
The condensed program is not for the slight of heart; speaking as one who has braved my way through the steep learning curves and falling comrads [another one bites the dust] back in Spring 2006. One year may sound quick and easy, but it's all about what's inside...a whirlwind from every facet of new media; video, audio, graphics, info architecture, interface design, intellectual property law, entreprenueurship, coding, designing, long days and late nights. I'm sure I forgot something, but it's all worth it when you come out of it with a kickass portfolio, a strong group of contacts/friends/networks for life, and some sweet skills.
This intake recently held their industry night named 'Pixel 8 | Anything but square' at Radical Entertainment on October 16th.
