Alan Zisman's High Tech Office column within the BIV's March 30 - April 5 issue goes on to compare ResumeVideoVault to Monster.ca. A David vs. Goliath comparison to say the least. However, the bigger they are (Workopolis/Monster/etc.) the harder it is to turn the ship. Hopefully thats the case as we compete in this competitive market.
We know it's coming (people using video to promote themselves), but the rush hasn't started yet. What this means is early adopters can set themselves even further apart.
I've been questioned, "Why don't people just post their videos on YouTube?" You can go to YouTube, just don’t expect anyone from your town, in your chosen field to find you. YouTube is too convoluted for employers to find specific individuals in their town, with specific skills. Employers would not be interested in sorting through promo videos, self-help, and the myriad of unrelated topics to find an appropriate video. We actually endorse using YouTube, just not for employers. As a job-seeker, it makes complete sense to upload a video to YouTube and put a link to it on your physical resume. And as you send out your resume, prospective employers can click on the link. However, if you want to get into a database of video resumes viewed by employers who are seeking you, it seems logical, especially considering it’s free (for job-seekers) to put your video in our “vault”. Then went companies are in the hiring mode, your resume is there – ready to be viewed. This is ideal for the executives who don’t want to spend their time actively seeker other opportunities while they work in situations where they are not entirely happy.
I have also been asked about "discrimination". The answer is fairly simple. The only potential discrimination that would happen is by the employer. Whether you show up in person, or appear in a video, the end result is the same. You may not be hired by that bad employer. Eventually we hope that they well be found out. But that's not what we are doing here. We are the vessel. If there is a negative here, it is that we make the potential discrimination happen faster. Thinking about changing jobs?
