Eco Friendly Living
A solar-powered, eco-conscious home taking shape in Sayulita, Mexico.
Besides all this media mumbo jumbo, I have a passion for living lighter on this planet. My journey begins when I started building an eco-home in Sayulita (2015), when I purchased a property at TierraLuz. a solar-powered eco-community nestled between the jungle and the Pacific Ocean. I was drawn to the idea of creating a home that would work with nature rather than simply occupy the land.
This dream was shared with my wife, Doreen. She was an amazing woman, and we both wanted to live more responsibly—using fewer resources, producing less waste, and becoming more connected to the natural world around us. The home was meant to become part of the life we imagined building together.
In 2016, Doreen died from cancer. Losing her changed every aspect of my life and made the project much more difficult, both emotionally and financially. Suddenly living on one income, I could no longer build the home according to the schedule we had once envisioned.
Instead, the house took shape slowly over many years. Construction moved forward whenever time, finances, and circumstances allowed. Although the process was often challenging, each stage brought me closer to completing something that Doreen and I had dreamed about together.
Sustainability is built into the way the property functions. We have a community well, which provides water and makes us more conscious of how much we use. Grey and black water are managed on the property through a biodigester system, with grey water being returned to the land to help nourish plants rather than simply being treated as waste.
Solar energy is another important part of the home. The system (solar panels & invertor) generates clean electricity, and when it produces more power than the house requires, the excess energy is returned and sold back to the electrical grid. It is rewarding to know that the home can produce renewable energy as well as consume it.
Life at TierraLuz is also about community. Residents share a desire to live more sustainably while caring for the land and enjoying the surrounding jungle, gardens, wildlife and ocean views. Beyond TierraLuz, Sayulita has its own remarkable sense of community—a colourful coastal town shaped by Mexican culture, local families, surfing, fishing, music, food, creativity and people drawn here from around the world.
Today, my eco-home represents far more than a building. It is the result of patience, perseverance and adaptation through some of the most difficult years of my life. Most importantly, it remains a tribute to Doreen and to the environmentally conscious life we hoped to create together and a legacy for my daughters Amanda and Lauren.
